The opening sequence begins with an extreme long shot of the setting which consists of a river surrounded by mountains. This allows the audience to have an idea of where the film might be set. There is also movement used with the camera which allows the audience to follow the camera and view the setting of the opening sequence. A high-angle shot is then used to show the audience a birds eye-view of the setting and particularly, to focus on a car that is travelling on an isolated road. The use of camera in this opening sequence is quite shaky which would account to the fact that the film is a psychological horror and films of this genre usually highlight insanity and unsteadiness of characters which the camera is portraying in its shaky/unsteady movement. As for editing, the opening sequence consists of many straight cuts. The reason for this could be so that the audience does not focus on one shot for too long and to ask questions about the setting and why the film is set in this area. Another reason could be to portray how the characters mind works. Maybe he does not focus on things for too long and changes his thoughts quickly and swiftly due to his mental state and using straight cuts could be a way to imitate this. The music in this opening sequence is very sinister and dark as alto horns are heard playing throughout. This creates a tense atmosphere for the audience as the horns are very repetitive and sound as if they are representing something evil in the opening sequence and the horns may be trying to introduce the audience to this evil being/setting. Occasional high pitched sounds are heard in the background as if they are distorted cries or distorted wailing. This also creates a tension in the audience as the sound does not sound 'normal' and sounds 'abnormal' and psychotic. The typography is very basic in this opening sequence. The credits are in a bright blue colour in capital letters rolling up the screen. This creates a contrast as the font is in a bright colour and bright colours are consisted to be enlightening. Even though the colour blue is associated with sorrow, the use of it in the credits makes it seem as though the credits are presenting happiness. This could create confusion in the audience which could ultimately be a good thing because they will start to ask questions and will be intrigued by the choice of colour and font. The positioning of the credits is very intruding because the credits roll upwards which means that the audience will focus on the credits rather than the actual setting. However, the credits come in later on in the opening sequence which may help their focus. As for the mise-en-scene of the opening sequence, there are mountains, trees, one car on an isolated road, a river and a couple of buildings towards the end. The setting is isolated in the sense that there is only one yellow car driving along a skinny, isolated road in which looks to be the middle of nowhere. This immediately sets the audience up for questions such as Why is the road so isolated? Who is in the car? Where is this place? |
