The genre of my opening sequence is psychological thriller. I did some research on the main elements of thriller to get a gist of the feeling that I have to create. I found out that thriller's use suspense, tension and excitement as it's main elements. They also heavily stimulate viewers moods. After this, I did research on Alfred Hitchcock who is considered one of the best filmmakers of all time and nicknamed "The Master of Suspense". I watched many scenes from Hitchcock's films to analyse the cinematography, sound and editing. I watched the famous shower scene from Psycho for inspiration.
According to IMDb, the best psychological thrillers are Se7en, The Machinist, The Silence of The Lambs, Jacob's Ladder, Pi and so on. Psychological Thriller's have evolved over time due to changes in technology, creating scarier and gorier films.
An example of an early Psychological thriller is Spellbound (1945) which is an American psychological mystery thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock starring Ingrid Bergman, Gregory Peck, Michael Chekhov and Leo G. Carroll. The film is about the new head of a mental asylum who turns out not to be what he claims. The film is an adaptation of the novel The House of Dr. Edwardes (1927) by Hilary Saint George Saunder and John Palmer. |
