Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
Moonwalker is an American anthology film release in 1988 by singer Michael Jackson. The film is about Michael's confrontation with a ruthless drug dealer by the name of Mr Big, played by Joe Pesci.
Moonwalker has two binary oppositions. Good vs. Bad - Michael vs. Mr Big and 1930's Gangsters vs. An army. The film shows the true differences between the oppositions by making Michael look innocent and pure. This is shown in his superhero-like mannerisms and his clothing - he mainly wears white in the film. Whereas Mr Big is seen to be evil and inhumane because of his plan to give drugs to all the children in the world. Also, the scenes with Mr Big are mainly dim and dark to show the darkness of his character. These differences are especially highlighted in the scene where Michael is surrounded by Mr Big's armed men as Mr Big tortures Katie. As for the 1930's Gangsters, they are seen to be on Michael's side which automatically makes them 'good'. As for Mr Big's Army, they are the 'bad guys' because they are fighting for Mr Big and torturing the homeless children.
There are a series of enigma codes in this film. For example, in the beginning Michael is seen stepping out of a house/music shop while the homeless kids look down on him from a building across the street. The shot then changes to Mr Big's army firing shots at Michael. This immediately makes you start to ask questions such as: Why did they try and shoot him? Who is he? Why was he coming out of the shop/house? Who are those kids? etc. This scene leaves the viewer asking questions as it is the beginning of the film and it has already started with a shock. This makes the viewer want to continue watching to have their questions answered.
