Forrest Gump Opening Sequence
Forrest Gump is one of my favourite films of all time. The opening sequence is something that I always pay attention to when watching the film. The opening sequence starts of with a feather floating from a blue sky (using CGI) and it floats across the screen while the credits roll. One thing I love about the opening sequence is that the feather is not distracting when the credits are rolling so you can pay attention to the credits while watching the feather float across the screen. Also, the colours used are not too bright or too dull, which can also be distracting.
As the feather falls/floats, buildings are able to be seen which makes the opening sequence seem magical because it's as if the feather is leading the viewer somewhere magical, starting from the sky. The feather then leads us to a busy American road where cars are seen driving by and people are crossing the street. Then the feather lands on a strangers shoulder which is a key moment and one of my favourite moments because the editing is done so well that it almost seems real. After the feather lands on the mans shoulder it is then swept away by the wind and blown in Forrest's direction - who is seen sitting on a bench on the side of the road. The feather then lands right in front of Forrest's feet and he picks it up. This is another key moment because it shows that the feather has landed in front of Forrest and has begun a story which is Forrest's Life. Forrest then picks up the feather and places it in a book in his briefcase.
The music used in this opening sequence is very uplifting and goes well with the editing. The music consists of strings being played in a major key and a fairly slow tempo to create this magical feeling and this feeling of following the feather on a journey.
The CGI and the magic that it brings and the music used are one of the few things that makes this opening sequence so memorable and interesting. The way the opening sequence builds up the story is a way that most films should begin.
